The <a href="https://www.yardhouse.com/home">Yard House</a>, a massive beer-and-food emporium, will open its second Bay Area location today.

The taps — 130 of them — will start flowing at 11 a.m. at The Veranda in Concord.

This second Bay Area location for the growing chain arrives eight years after the first, at San Jose’s Santana Row. The 16,000-square-foot restaurant will seat 430 customers inside and outside.

The Concord taps will feature a number of local brews — Affliction Amber from Concord’s very own Epidemic Ales, Oaktown from Calicraft of Walnut Creek and Smooth Ride from Del Cielo Brewing of Martinez — as well as state, national and international choices.

Those brews are held at 36 to 38 degrees in a glass-enclosed keg room and delivered to the restaurant’s central bar via more than two miles of beer lines.

The massive menu is heavy on beer-friendly snacks, appetizers, pizza and street tacos but also offers a number of entrees, salads and more. Any surplus food is donated to local food banks, a Yard House spokeswoman said.

First launched in Long Beach, the chain has grown to about 20 restaurants in Southern California and about 50 in other states, with concentrations in Florida and Texas. The city of Las Vegas has three.

Details: Open at 11 a.m. daily; closes at 12:30 a.m. Sunday-Thursday, at 1:20 a.m. Friday-Saturday. 2005 Diamond Blvd., Concord. <a href="https://www.yardhouse.com/home">www.yardhouse.com</a>

SoCal-founded Mexican restaurant Puesto expands its taco empire with a second Bay Area location next week. Puesto Concord, which follows the opening of a <a href="https://sf.eater.com/2018/5/14/17353624/puesto-santa-clara-inside-tacos-opening">huge Santa Clara Puesto in May,</a> will greet customers at 2035 Diamond Boulevard (in the Veranda Center) on Wednesday, November 14.

The new Puesto joins the Santa Clara location, two in the San Diego area, and two in Orange County. It’s smaller than its most recent sibling — but by most other measures, massive. The 7,500-square-foot indoor-outdoor space was designed by San Diego’s Paul Basile of BASILE Studio with murals by acclaimed Bay Area graffiti artist Chor Boogie.

There’s seating for 250, with patio space divided from the main dining room by hydraulic windows. More hydraulics (they like hydraulics) do the heavy lifting for bartenders: As at the Santa Clara Puesto, there’s a liquor carousel with kneeling shelves that present bottles to bartenders — no ladders necessary for mixing those margaritas.

“We keep learning from the spaces, incorporating aspects, and every new one is the best — so this is the best one yet,” says Puesto owner Eric Adler.

<iframe data-google-container-id="b" data-integralas-id-c191c7d9-6acb-467d-802b-6fa978ce3023="" data-load-complete="true" frameborder="0" height="425.2075471698113" id="google_ads_iframe_/172968584/eater/sf.eater.com_3" name="google_ads_iframe_/172968584/eater/sf.eater.com_3" scrolling="no" title="3rd party ad content" width="100%"></iframe>

A first-generation Mexican American, Adler runs Puesto with his brothers Alex and Alan and partner/executive chef Luisteen Gonzalez, a native of Mexico City. In his experience, “eating tacos can be a lot of different things” — more and less formal affairs than dinner at Puesto. “The food’s number one, but we put a lot of emphasis on the space,” Adler says. There are some flashy food items to match the decor: Think filet mignon tacos with melted cheese, avocado, and pistachio serrano on memorable blue corn tortillas from LA’s Kernel of Truth Organics.

“We’re all creative and love design, and we want you, in order to have the best experience, to be in a cool space that you feel great in.”

As Puesto has grown since 2012, Mexican cuisine has only gained more cultural currency in the US. “My favorite food growing up was chilaquiles,” says Adler. “10 years ago, that was not a common thing. Now you see it on every brunch menu.”

To keep up to speed — and to continue to spread the love for Mexican cuisine — Adler and team are closely tracking food trends in Mexico City. Inspired by street-side taco shops grilling meet in front of customers, Puesto Concord will introduce items like ribeye carne asada sizzled table side on lava rock.

After Puesto Concord opens Tuesday, hours will be Tuesday, Friday, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Puesto’s Splashy East Bay Outpost Opens With Filet Mignon Tacos Next Week

A popular Sacramento-based sushi bar has opened its first location in the East Bay. Small plates on the menu range from the simple (garlic edamame) to the complex, like the Puff Daddy shrimp tempura stuffed with crab mix and served with creamy house sauce on a bed of microgreens.

Although cooked plates of chicken teriyaki and tonkatsu are available, most of the focus is on entrees of elaborately dressed sashimi and specialty rolls like the DMC: filled with tempura lobster, avocado, crab mix, and topped with torched white tuna, sauce and tempura bits. The new sushi spot has gotten solid feedback thus far, with a four-star rating out of 241 reviews on Yelp.

Say Cheese, Concord: 8 Incredible Photo Ops

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. - As Contra Costa County libraries re-opened for the first time in more than a year on Monday, some businesses reported seeing record sales numbers of patrons similar to pre-pandemic times in a sign that things are getting back to normal.

The proof is at The Veranda in Concord where people have returned to dine, shop, and eat. According to The Veranda General Manager Izamar Hook, the parking lot at the shopping center was at 90% capacity on Saturday. The Veranda has been fully re-opened for about a month and has seen a surge in customers.

"We have several tenants who are reporting pre-pandemic, pre-COVID sales and actually record breaking sales because there's so much built up energy," Hook said.

She noted that roughly three to four tenants are seeing their best numbers since The Veranda opened for business a couple of years ago.

"I think everyone is excited to get a little bit of normalcy back," Hook added.

One tenant, Super Duper Burgers, continues to be a hit. The fast casual Bay Area burger chain is celebrating its 11-year anniversary since opening its first location in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood, according to Super Duper Concord General Manager Edson Palacios.

"It’s definitely a lot more packed," Palacios said. "The parking lot being full almost every day. We feel the difference for sure."

Movie theaters are drawing crowds too even with limited capacity. A spokesperson for Cinemark said this past weekend was the best in the COVID-era. The release of movies like Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer brought in an estimated 54 million dollars across North American theaters.

For those who prefer a quieter experience, Monday marked the first time libraries in Contra Costa County reopened in more than a year with grab-and-go service. Contra Costa County Librarian Alison McKee said the counties 26 locations will have visible changes, including floor markings to indicate spacing, hand sanitizers, and Plexiglas windows around service desks.

"The browsing experience is just something that can't be replicated online," McKee said . "When I come in, that's what I look forward to most."

California State Librarian Greg Lucas was on hand at the reopening of the libraries in Concord and Hercules.

"A lot of the coolest parts of libraries are the spaces inside and the ability to meet other people inside so it's great to see that happening again," Lucas said

The 10 Best Places to Go Ice Skating in San Francisco (Plus, a Bonus Option for Pint-Sized Skaters)

From every angle, Concord’s <a href="https://www.longportfc.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Longport Fish Company</a> has great coastal energy.

It is named for the Jersey Shore borough where chef-owner Nicholas diArenzo spent his summers as a kid feasting on crab. The new restaurant is in the spot that formerly housed EMC Seafood &amp; Raw Bar, which closed during the pandemic, though EMC’s San Jose location remains open. And despite a bland exterior, the new dining room is awash in bright, ocean-blue accents.

Most importantly, the seafood restaurant, which gets local and sustainable seafood delivered six days a week, is diArenzo’s opportunity to make his mark on Bay Area dining. He spent 20 years working his way up on the San Francisco restaurant scene before opening two fine dining establishments, Market Tavern and Prime Table, in Stockton, where he lives with his family.

Entrees like a miso roasted black cod and a spring halibut with asparagus puree show diArenzo’s flair for flavor and technique, not to mention pretty food. Brunch service, which launched this month, offers a tempting poached lobster benedict and French toast made from a brown sugar and vanilla babka baked by Fire Swamp Provisions in Sebastopol. Did we mention the smoked salmon and bagel towers?
<video></video>

Here’s our take from a recent Sunday night dinner.

VIBE: Coastal. Longport is bathed in dreamy cerulean blue, down to the leather stools, water glasses and dramatic, semi-circle banquette, which is the best table in the house. There’s also an open kitchen and a large bar with sand-colored pendant lights and plenty of seating.

FOOD: Large menus generally make me nervous, but Longport’s is just big enough — with raw bar, salads, soups, sandwiches and wood-fired entrees — to ensure something for everyone. If you’re bringing a group, opt for a seafood tower, like The Tugboat ($80), which comes with oysters, clams, ceviche, half a Maine lobster and kombu mignonette. It’s a solid appetizer for two to four people.

Distinctive starters include Spicy Salmon Tartare and Crispy Rice Cakes ($12) and Griddled Corn Bread with Calabrian Chile-Maple Butter ($12), while soups and salads skew on the classic side. There’s a New England Clam Chowder ($6 cup, $10 bowl) and LFC Louie Salad with choice of Oregon bay shrimp or Dungeness crab ($15 small, $32 large).

<figcaption>The Halibut with Colossal Asparagus is a spring special at Longport Fish Company in The Veranda in Concord. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group) </figcaption>
</figure>

For that Roasted Miso Black Cod ($38), diArenzo marinates the cod for three days in miso, mirin, sake and sugar. Its accompanying crispy potato terrine is labor intensive: Potatoes are sliced super thin, layered in butter, and pressed overnight before hitting the fryer. Both dishes frequently sell out.

Halibut, a special on our visit, came with colossal asparagus and shaved Brussels sprouts from Stockton’s Zuckerman Family Farms. The dish is finished in a scrumptious green garlic and bacon vinaigrette. Burgers and sandwiches round out the offerings. Even the kids menu is solid. Crunchy, panko-crusted chicken tenders are made from brined Mary’s chicken.

DRINK: A selection of 10 craft cocktails ($14 each) made with local spirits, like Sebastopol’s Spirit Works Vodka and Alameda’s St. George Spirits Terroir Gin. There are also 11 craft beers on draft, most from Northern California, and 21 wines by the glass starting at $12. The bottle list includes a mix from California, France, Italy and beyond, with most offerings in the $45-$68 range.

Though it’s nearly cold enough to see your breath during early morning hours, actual freezing temperatures around the Bay Area are fleeting. But the chill in the air is reliable enough to create a yen for classic outdoor fall and winter activities, including ice skating.

Ice Skating Returns to Contra Costa County

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. Jan. 14, 2025 — CenterCal Properties LLC, a full-service commercial real estate company serving the western U.S., today announced that its mixed-use retail center, The Veranda, has been recognized by IREM® (Institute of Real Estate Management) and received the group’s CSP (Certified Sustainable Property) certification. The recognition is a result of exceptional real estate management in green building performance and is the first IREM CSP for CenterCal.

The Veranda is the East Bay’s next-generation shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Located in Concord, Calif., the 375,000-square-foot retail center offers a refined and authentic Mission Revival-style architecture, lush landscaping, exhilarating water features and enviable guest amenities, such as a gourmet grocery store and state-of-the-art cinema.

“With this certification, we help demonstrate that enjoyable and upscale retail, restaurant and entertainment experiences like The Veranda can also be environmentally healthy and sustainable,” said Jean Paul Wardy, CEO of CenterCal. “We are committed maintaining The Veranda as a vibrant and responsible neighbor to the people of Concord and the surrounding region, and we look forward to our other properties also earning the same certification.”

The IREM Certified Sustainable Property is a prestigious sustainability certification program that focuses on the role of exceptional real estate management in green building performance. This certification is a mark of distinction for office, medical office, industrial, multifamily, senior housing, retail and self-storage properties. IREM’s sustainability certification provides properties with recognition for resource efficiency and environmental programs.

“I’m proud to highlight The Veranda earning our Certified Sustainable Property certification, a key benchmark for environmental responsibility in real estate management,” said Libby Ekre, CPM®, 2024 IREM president and Principal with Bryten Real Estate Partners, a nationwide firm based in Phoenix, AZ. “This certification empowers property managers to take measurable steps toward sustainability, and demonstrates their commitment to operational excellence. Together, we’re shaping a greener, more responsible future.”

To earn the certification, The Veranda had to first meet key baseline requirements and then earn necessary points across energy, water, health, recycling and purchasing categories. Tenants and residents increasingly associate environmental performance with quality, so the certification presents a prime opportunity to showcase high-quality, responsible real estate management.

About IREM Certified Sustainable Property Certification

The IREM Certified Sustainable Property certification assesses the sustainability performance of existing properties in five categories – energy, water, health, recycling, and purchasing. Thousands of existing office, multifamily, and retail properties in the United States are working toward sustainability goals but cannot get LEED certification. IREM saw a need for a new sustainability certification program, one that is attainable, affordable, meaningful, and available to three main property types — office properties, multifamily communities, and shopping centers – and allows properties to demonstrate green performance to stakeholders.

Barnes and Noble arrives in Concord May 22. The book store unlocks its doors for a  grand opening on Wednesday at The Veranda.

“We could not be more excited to be opening a new store prototype at The Veranda as part of our ongoing testing of new stores across the country,” said Frank Morabito, Vice President, Stores, Barnes &amp; Noble. The shop “will offer a clean, contemporary design that is easy to shop and friendly to our customers. It will feature a full assortment of books at its core, with a curated selection of educational toys and games, family games and puzzles and gift items for avid readers.”

The 12,200-square-foot store features modern design aesthetics. It features oak bookshelves and a mix of wood-grain tile and carpet throughout. Lower profile bookshelves provide customers with a panoramic view of the store, adding an open and airy feel. Two large “book theaters” invite customers to discover books in a new 360-degree experience. Illuminated bookcases further enhance discovery. From community seating around a table to individual comfortable chairs, customers of all ages will find a comfortable spot. You can  curl up alone with a good book or gather with a small group of friends.

<h3>Storytime for kids</h3>

The Children’s Section – with a LEGO® activity table and dedicated Storytime space – creates a special environment for kids. A whimsical “jungle gym” display feature, built specially for toys, adds a sense of fun to the space.

The Café offers a wide selection of Starbucks® beverages and fresh baked goods. Healthy grab-and-go snacks are also available. Patrons can choose from a variety of informal seating options, including bar seating, outdoor seating and a community worktable which includes easily accessible USB/AC outlets.

Booksellers at the shop will be equipped with tablets to help them assist customers anywhere in the store. This new technology will allow booksellers to help customers with product selection and easily locate books on the store floor, as well as check customers out without a visit to checkout counter. In addition, the store has self-serve kiosks that enable customers to research, discover and locate books throughout the store.

<h3>Community Support</h3>

Barnes &amp; Noble would like to support the community and host events of interest to customers, from book fairs for local schools to book signings and story times. A 700-square-foot flexible event space will be available for author events and book signings. Contact Barnes &amp; Noble at The Veranda at 925-349-3500 if you are interested in using their event space.

The new store is located at 2025 Diamond Blvd., Suite 125, Concord, California.

<h3>Espetus Brazilian Steak House Headed for East Bay</h3>

Diablo Dish: Espetus Coming to Concord

CONCORD, Calif., Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Popbar, the maker of customizable popGelato, popSorbetto, and yogurtPops, founded in New York City in 2010 opened its first location in Concord at The Veranda.  An official Grand Opening celebration will be held in the comings weeks to mark the special occasion.  Festivities will include complimentary pops for the first 100 customers and the chance to win free Popbar for a year!

Dedicated to serving 'the best' in frozen treats, Popbar serves handcrafted gelato, sorbetto, and yogurt in a new way – on a stick.  All pops are made in-house daily with all-natural ingredients.  On the menu, you'll find 40+ rotating flavors ranging from classics (Chocolate, Vanilla) to the more unique (Green Tea, Passion Fruit), and even seasonal ones too (Watermelon, Pumpkin Pie).  You can enjoy your pop as-is, or customize to your liking.  Premium dippings and toppings include dark, milk, and white chocolate, nuts, sprinkles, waffle cone, caramel corn, and more!

At Popbar, a mouthwatering experience awaits everyone, even those looking for vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free options.  All popSorbettos are vegan-dairy-gluten-soy-free, and all popGelatos and yogurtPops are gluten-soy free.  Other indulgences include Hot Chocolate on a Stick, and Popbar's latest creation, gelatoShake.  Available in 6 delicious flavors, the 16oz drink is served in a milk-jug style cup with a chocolate dipped waffle cone overflowing with whipped cream!

All this decadence can be attributed to Italian roots and a love for supremely delicious treats.  Blending authenticity, innovation, and high quality ingredients, Popbar became a recipe for success, and the contemporary concept has been changing the way we enjoy our favorite Italian desserts since - on an international scale.

Popbar currently has 18 stores in the US in states like AZ, CA, FL, NC, NY, and TX, and 11 stores internationally in countries like Canada, Panama, and Singapore, but this is just the beginning.  There are currently 6 stores under construction in new territories, and many more to come.  Popbar Concord, the fourth to open in 2018, is located at The Veranda, a luxury, mixed-use retail center with specialty dinning, gourmet grocery, open air shopping, and more.

"I'm overjoyed to be a part of the Popbar family and am excited to bring the experience of customizable, all natural, low calorie treats to the East Bay," says Sarabjit Bajaj, Popbar franchisee.  "I'm thrilled to make this dream a reality here at The Veranda where we will be offering healthy, authentic, delightful treats to shoppers and moviegoers at this very special, new complex."

While Popbar is expanding rapidly, the brand maintains a 'mom and pop' feel at all locations with the help of its hand-selected franchisees.  Each store prides itself on Popbar's original values - superior quality, in-house production, outstanding service, authenticity, and family-friendly fun.  New stores quickly become classic neighborhood spots, and supplies like fruit and milk are purchased locally.

Popbar is a perfect treat for anyone - baby to adult, and for any occasion - dessert date to midnight snack.  With so many flavors and combinations to try, just one visit won't do.  You'll definitely want to stop in for a "love at first bite" experience, but if you're a foodie, don't forget to snap a picture of your pop first – that is, if you can wait.

To keep up with everything Popbar, follow the brand on Instagram @popbar and Facebook @popbarUSA, or visit <a href="http://www.pop-bar.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.pop-bar.com</a>.

Puesto Joins the Fun at The Veranda

They just keep rolling out new dining options at The Veranda in Concord, and <a href="http://eatpuesto.com/" target="_blank">Puesto</a> (you win a small prize if you guessed it was Mexican food) is the latest addition.

This is the sixth location for the family-owned group, and it’s by no means a traditional taqueria (the guacamole goes for $11, and three tacos cost $16). But the fact that Puesto serves up tacos and other Mexican standards—plus margaritas—gives one more reason to visit the rapidly expanding shopping center. It all officially starts Wednesday, November 14.

<h3>Two More Options Open in Public Market Emeryville</h3>

Both the <a href="http://www.blushwinebar.com/" target="_blank">Public Bar by Blush</a> and <a href="http://nabiq.com/" target="_blank">NabiQ</a> have opened in the continually growing <a href="https://publicmarketemeryville.com/" target="_blank">Public Market Emeryville</a>, with the Public Bar serving its slushy-drink specialties (plus the usual mainstays) and NabiQ bringing a Korean barbecue menu to the table.

But, wait. That’s not all! Next week, <a href="https://piginapickle.com/" target="_blank">Pig in a Pickle</a> will give BBQ fans a Southern slant to sample.

<h3>Chow in Piedmont Has Closed</h3>

At least <a href="http://chowfoodbar.com/" target="_blank">Chow</a> in Danville lasted 10 years before closing in May—the Piedmont branch of the chain didn’t even last 10 months before shutting down.

All of this is a little surprising, given how busy the Lafayette outpost is, but the restaurant business is unforgiving, as the constant litany of closings will attest.

<h3>Fieldwork Brewing Company Opens Thursday in City Center Bishop Ranch</h3>

The Berkeley-based brewing company has set up shop in the highly anticipated City Center Bishop Ranch in San Ramon. <a href="http://fieldworkbrewing.com/" target="_blank">Fieldwork</a>'s taproom (which makes a total of six outlets around Northern California) opens Thursday, November 15, in the hopes of quenching the Tri-Valley's thirst with some fresh, local suds.

The new taproom is outfitted with at least 16 rotating beers on tap, a gorgeous bar featuring reclaimed wood from the roof of San Francisco's Pier 31, cool communal tables, comfy lounge seating, and a killer patio complete with fire pits.

And if you feel like taking a brew home, just grab a crowler out of the well-stocked beer fridge.

<h3>Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey Visits San Ramon’s Worth Ranch</h3>

Well, it’s not really Jack who’ll be dropping in at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 8, but those who opt to participate in the <a href="http://rodneyworth.com/worth-ranch/" target="_blank">Worth Ranch</a> Whiskey Dinner may well be singing the chorus of Eric Church fave “Jack Daniels” Friday morning. (For those who aren’t fans—you should be—the refrain goes, “Jack Daniels kicked my @$$ again last night.”)

There is more to the story, of course, than the Jack Slush, the Jack Rye, the Jacked-Up Manhattan, and the Jack Single Barrel, as each drink will be paired with a Southern-style appetizer, entrée, or dessert. The cost to get up close and personal with Jack? Just $65.

<h3>Bar Cava Brings French Wine to Martinez</h3>

<a href="http://www.vins-chanson.com/en?age=1" target="_blank">Domaine Chanson</a> is one of the most famous wine-growing areas in Burgundy, and <a href="http://www.barcava.com/" target="_blank">Bar Cava</a><a href="http://www.barcava.com/" target="_blank"> Wine Bar and Eatery</a>—just a few blocks from the Martinez Courthouse on Main Street—will feature a variety of Domaine Chanson wines with its own French-inspired meal on Friday, November 9.

The first seating is at 6:30 p.m., and the second is at 8:30 p.m., with both offering a prix fixe of $55.

<h3>Getting Bubbly at The Peasant and the Pear—and More</h3>

Love champagne? Then Danville’s <a href="http://http//rodneyworth.com/peasant-pear/" target="_blank">The Peasant and the Pear</a>should be your destination on Tuesday, November 13, when the five-course French Bubbly Dinner shows up on the calendar.

For $125, diners at the 6:30 p.m. event will indulge in five three-ounce pours of French champagne, plus a five-course meal starring sea scallops and filet mignon.

But if champagne doesn’t tickle your palate (see what we did there?), The Peasant and the Pear will offer Martini Mondays through the first of the year. What’s a Martini Monday, you ask? Martinis cost $1 (except on Monday holidays), and all proceeds benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano County.

Finally, those who want to skip the hassle of cooking for Thanksgiving can pay $120 and get enough of the traditional goodies to serve six people, but orders must be made by November 15 for a November 21 pickup.

<h3>Story Coffee Co. Begins a New Chapter in Livermore</h3>

After a preface that began at the Livermore farmers market in 2016 and part-time prologues at the Bankhead Theater and the Switch Tech Incubator, <a href="http://www.storycoffee.co/" target="_blank">Story Coffee Co.</a> will finally turn the page and settle down in a home of its own in December.

The coffeehouse will be located across from the Backyard Bayou on Maple Street and will feature craft espressos, cold brew on tap, baked goods, and even a retail corner. And though there’s no alcohol involved, the whiskey latte has gotten great reviews.

<h3>Plucked Strikes a Chord with Chicken Lovers</h3>

<a href="https://www.pluckedchickenandbeer.com/" target="_blank">Plucked Chicken and Beer</a> in San Ramon—an offshoot of <a href="https://www.saucedbbqandspirits.com/" target="_blank">Sauced BBQ and Spirits</a>—has been so successful with its chicken-centric, fast-casual concept that a second Plucked is now scheduled to open in Pleasanton in February.

The new location will be in the Pleasanton Gateway Shopping Center off Bernal Avenue, in the space that previously housed Baja Fresh.

<h3>Concord Gets Its Own Coffee Shop</h3>

The key here is the capital letters, as there are already plenty of coffee shops in Concord (as one would expect in a city of 125,000 people). But now <a href="http://www.coffeeshop411.com/" target="_blank">Coffee Shop</a>—with previous iterations in Lafayette, Danville, and Walnut Creek—is in <a href="http://https//shoptheveranda.com/" target="_blank">The Veranda</a> as well.

Unlike most coffeehouses, however, Coffee Shop also offers beer and wine (after 5 p.m.) alongside a variety of breakfast and lunch options—plus the usual baked goods.

<h3>Taqueria La Plaza Coming to Walnut Creek</h3>

After 15 years in Concord Taqueria La Plaza aims to open its second restaurant in November in the Palos Verdes Mall (home of Lunardi’s Markets).

The menu at the new spot in Walnut Creek will be the same as the one at the original eatery (located at the corner of Clayton Road and Sutter Street), featuring the same classic taqueria fare, including tortas, mariscos, and, of course, tacos.

<h3>Rooted to Bloom in Pleasant Hill</h3>

After six rootless years, <a href="http://www.rootedcoffeeco.com/" target="_blank">Rooted Coffee Company</a> has found a home for its coffee and plant-based foods on Oak Park Boulevard in Pleasant Hill.

Owners Jon and Jenny Gilmore, a local husband-and-wife team, got their start at the Walnut Creek farmers market and hope to kick off the New Year by opening their new store on January 1. They aim to have soft openings throughout December in preparation for the official debut.

<h3>“Beer Wall” Coming to Dublin’s Thirsty Bay</h3>

So much beer, so little time—and when Dublin’s <a href="http://https//www.thirstybay.com/" target="_blank">Thirsty Bay</a> opens in October, beer drinkers will face a daunting choice: selecting which of the 39 beers on tap they want to try.

Like Hops and Sessions in Livermore, Thirsty Bay gives each customer a wristband that allows them to draw from any of the available taps, which then charges individuals by the ounce. And since Thirsty Bay was founded by a trio of craft beer enthusiasts, expect variety and unusual choices—and definitely more than a few visits to sample all 39 options.

<h3>Vinous Reverie’s Grand Opening Saturday in Walnut Creek</h3>

Those who especially love wines from overseas may discover their new favorite wine shop on Ygnacio Valley Boulevard (between North Main Street and Broadway).

<a href="http://vinousreverie.com/" target="_blank">Vinuous Reverie</a>—which will have its grand opening at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 29—will feature “a unique and adventurous collection of wines from around the world.” Owners Anu and Igor Ivanov had difficulty finding these special wines for their own personal enjoyment, so they decided to skip the middleman and open up a store themselves.

Check out the highly rated Rieslings and sparkling wines from England, Austria, and Tasmania—a regional trio you don’t see linked together that often—among many other choices.

The window-seating tasting area will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Fridays and all day Saturdays, when the Ivanovs will offer thematic wine flights that spring from their wide and deep knowledge of vino.

<h3>Boba Guys Hit the Big Time(s) with Tapioca Pearls</h3>

It seems like you can’t go anywhere without bumping into a boba tea outlet, but surprisingly, one of the key ingredients (tapioca pearls) could only be imported from Taiwan. So San Francisco–based <a href="http://www.bobaguys.com/" target="_blank">Boba Guys</a>—with various locations in the city, Los Angeles, and New York—decided to take the plunge and manufacture the pearls themselves, choosing San Leandro for the factory’s site.

The New York Times thought enough of the story to publish a long article about it, so we figured it was probably worth mentioning here, even if there is no East Bay Boba Guys—yet. But the chain is in expansion mode, with three more shops on the way this year alone, and so we’re pretty sure that Berkeley or Oakland can’t be far behind.

<h3>A New Brunch Option for Livermore</h3>

<a href="https://www.rangelifelivermore.com/" target="_blank">Range Life</a>, one of Livermore’s best restaurants, just added a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekend brunch. The menu includes not only brunch classics like French toast and coffee cake, but also some interesting twists on traditional offerings such as a sourdough donut and a lamb burger. Of course there are Bloody Marys and mimosas too, but the adventurous may want to go for the Bacon Old-Fashioned or the Umami Michelada made with fish sauce and Serrano chilies. (Not sure I’m all in on these, but sometimes you’ve got to get out of your comfort zone.)

Korean food gets a fast-casual boost at Ko-Cups, the new restaurant at Concord’s Veranda marketplace that aims to capture a slice of the vibrant Korean street-food scene.

Evolved from a traveling food booth that made fans at fairs and markets in Alameda, Treasure Island and Lodi for several years, Ko-Cups is the brainchild of partners Dennis Muñoz and Kyungmo Ko.

THE VIBE: Their quick-service concept works perfectly with the setting of the Veranda, as Muñoz pointed out in a recent interview, allowing diners to get everything in one bowl inside the small, brightly-colored interior of the restaurant and sit in or even stroll around the outdoor Fountain Park section of the marketplace. Picture a miniature version of the Bellagio fountains, surrounded by chairs and tables, outdoor lounges, fire pits and heaters, with a big turf area for kids to run around and play. Order inside, pick up your order when it’s ready, and grab a table.

THE FOOD: The menu is straightforward: Pick your protein — grilled ribeye beef bulgogi ($9), spicy pork ($8), barbecue chicken or Korean chicken bites ($8), or meat and veggie dumplings ($7), select white or brown rice, and they’ll take it from there. In the mix when you’re served your cup will be crispy lettuce, japchae (sweet potato noodles), corn, pickled yellow radish and black sesame seeds. Step over to a small bar of sauces to top your cup with a variety of flavored mayos and variations on gochujang to add a little creaminess, spice or both.

There’s also an $8 bibimbap option for vegetarians; meat-eaters can add the protein of their choice for $2 or $3 more.

DON’T MISS: The P-Cup’s spicy pork was tender and tasty. If the idea of super-spicy food scares you away, you’ll be safe here. If you love it hot, heap a generous portion of gochujang sauce on top to kick it up a notch.

PERFECT FOR: Kicking off or wrapping up a shopping trip. Parents will probably love letting their children work up an appetite playing in Fountain Park, then getting them a fast, affordable meal here. Teenagers will likely flock here for lunch or dinner before a movie at the theater, which is just steps away.

DETAILS: Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 2045 Diamond Blvd., Concord; <a href="http://ko-cups.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">www.ko-cups.com.</a>

JCrew Factory is coming soon to The Veranda!

Outside the Lines (OTL), a design-build construction company that specializes in creating one-of-a-kind water features, rock work, and themed environments, has announced the completing of its musically choreographed, $1.7 million water feature that will serve as the centerpiece of CenterCal Properties' new 375,000 square-foot retail, dinging and entertainment destination, The Veranda.

To coincide with the grand opening of The Veranda, CenterCal held a consumer contest asking the general public to select the song that will accompany the fountain's inaugural show. The winner? Bohemian Rhapsody.

"Today's savvy developers are focused on creating immersive experiences that truly engage customers," says J. Wickham Zimmerman, Chief Executive Office of OTL. "As public spaces become the centerpiece of retail destinations, today's best developers and owners are incorporating increasingly complex entertainment attractions to cater to evolving consumer demands. With the fountain at The Veranda, CenterCal did something that immerses the consumer even further - the developer invited the community to be a part of the retail center's development by allowing them to vote on the song selected for the fountain shows."

Mummy & Me Fun Fest - Halloween 2022: The Veranda, Concord

CONCORD — More than three years after closing its popular Walnut Creek store and six years after shuttering its Pleasant Hill store, Barnes &amp; Noble is coming back to central Contra Costa County on Wednesday.

The new store will open in The Veranda shopping center on Diamond Boulevard, part of the chain’s effort over the last two years to test new store designs across the country and compete in a changing retail environment.

The 12,200-square-foot Concord store looks more modern than older ones. Oak bookshelves throughout are short enough to let customers see across the store and a mix of wood-grain tile and carpet cover the floors. As in older stores, a cafe sells Starbucks coffee and baked goods, with both table seating and bar seating situated around it.

What customers won’t see is the large CD selection that was a fixture in the Walnut Creek and other Barnes &amp; Noble stores for years. While a gift section includes some vinyl records, notebooks and gifts such as puzzles and games, as well as a kids’ section that sells some games and toys, the store’s focus is books.

Books are organized mostly in traditional fiction, non-fiction and smaller categories, but some shelves feature staff picks or local interests personalized for Concord.

Barnes &amp; Noble returns to the area after its Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek stores closed when agreements couldn’t be reached with the landlords there. Since then, the company, which also has stores in Antioch, El Cerrito and Dublin, in addition to some on the Peninsula and in the South Bay, announced last year it was reviewing alternative strategies, including a sale of the company. But it also has been experimenting with the new, more modern store concepts across the country — Concord is the 13th new store prototype for the company.

Meanwhile, an Amazon Books <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/11/02/amazon-books-opens-first-east-bay-outpost-in-broadway-plaza/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">store opened in downtown Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza</a>, in addition to one in San Jose and others across the country. Barnes &amp; Noble will have to contend with that competition, as well as the e-commerce convenience Amazon presents and smaller, independent bookstores in the Bay Area, many of which <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/09/10/bay-area-bookstores-hold-their-own-as-new-amazon-stores-loom/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">have found their stride</a> in hosting programs and events that draw customers.

Half Price Books, also a chain, has long held a devoted following. That store will <a href="https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/05/17/after-being-pushed-out-of-downtown-beloved-half-price-books-finds-new-home-in-concord/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">open later this year</a> in Willows Shopping Center next door to Barnes &amp; Noble’s home at The Veranda.

Still, Frank Morabito, vice president of stores for Barnes &amp; Noble, said the new shop’s seating, aesthetics and cafe sets it apart from the competition, and insisted that Concord is a “strong market” for the bookstore.

It will also be available to host events such as school book fairs, story time and author events, he said.

Veranda Autumn Festivities

Despite the pandemic, the Bay Area is expecting many new restaurants to open in 2021. In Central Contra Costa County, Concord will be home to five new spots of its own, including a brewery and beer garden opening near Todos Santos Plaza. The other four, including a sleek Brazilian steakhouse, are coming to The Veranda. Here’s the list of five.

Nick the Greek: This family-owned South Bay chain is opening its first Contra Costa County spot, bringing its traditional gyros and souvlaki to a casual, take-out friendly space. Fun fact: The restaurant was born after one of three close-knit cousins — all named Nick — traveled home from a trip to Greece and realized there was nowhere to get quality gyros near home. Nick the Greek will be opening at The Veranda this summer. 2001-2003 Diamond Blvd., Concord; <a href="https://www.nickthegreeksj.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">www.nickthegreeksj.com</a>

Side Gate Brewery &amp; Beer Garden: This spring, owners Kevin Wilson and Paul Culbertson will unveil this brewery and beer garden near Concord’s Todos Santos Plaza. Look for craft beer brewed on-site in a family-friendly taproom and expansive outdoor beer garden. The brewery will not offer food other than pre-packaged snacks, but it will partner with local restaurants and welcome outside food. 1822 Grant St., Concord; <a href="https://sidegatebrewing.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">https://sidegatebrewing.com</a>

Texas de Brazil: Bust out the stretchy pants for this Brazilian steakhouse, which will serve skewers of traditional sizzling beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage to patrons, who signal readiness by turning their cards to green. Turn your card red and servers will know to skeddadle so you can tuck into chef-crafted salads, roasted vegetables, cheese bread, garlic mashed potatoes and fried bananas. You’ll need a signature Caipirinha to wash it all down. The restaurant is anticipating opening once indoor dining is permitted at 50 to 75 percent occupancy. The Veranda, 2001-2003 Diamond Blvd., Concord; <a href="https://texasdebrazil.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">https://texasdebrazil.com</a>

Crumbl Cookies: This high-concept cookie and ice cream chain is opening its second Bay Area location (the first is in Brentwood) this year in The Veranda. Each week, the menu will rotate to offer four different specialty flavors, like Pink Velvet, a warm cake-batter cookie topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting and pink velvet cookie crumbs. Not to worry, though, Milk Chocolate Chip and Chilled Sugar Cookie will always be available. They’ll do delivery, too. Coming this summer 2001-2003 Diamond Blvd., Concord; <a href="https://crumblcookies.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">https://crumblcookies.com</a>

Crepe La Fontaine: Talent from downtown Walnut Creek’s authentic French bakery, Brioche de Paris, is behind this forthcoming crêperie, which will specialize in a variety of French crêpes as well as waffles, classic sandwiches, Gateaux Francais, espresso drinks and more. Coming in March to The Veranda, 2045 Diamond Blvd #14, Concord; <a href="https://www.briochedeparis.com/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">www.briochedeparis.com </a>

<h3>Brazil, Texas, and Italy Converge in The Veranda</h3>

The geographically challenged may have some issues with the latest Brazilian rodízio-style restaurant, but meat-lovers will definitely be happy with the wandering waiters and the slabs of meat that they cut at each table.

The Veranda—which seems to open a new restaurant each week—is the site for <a href="https://texasdebrazil.com/about/">Texas de Brazil.</a> The combination of churrasco, or roasted meat, with a nod to Texas flavors, is the latest addition to the Brazilian steakhouses that have sprung up all over the Bay Area.

The opening date for the nationwide chain’s latest outpost has not been set, so “coming soon” is the best we can do, as is the case with another exciting soon-to-open eatery at The Veranda.

<a href="https://dzpizzeria.com/about/">Doppio Zero,</a> or double zero, will arrive with its Neapolitan pizza and Southern Italian menu, which might be familiar to those who have eaten at the San Francisco, Cupertino, and Mountain View locations.

<h4>The Dave &amp; Buster’s restaurant chain is hiring in preparation for the Labor Day, Sept. 2, opening of its first East Bay location at The Veranda in Concord. Company officials are looking to fill more than 230 positions in front- and back-of-house capacities. The new Concord restaurant will mark the company’s third Bay Area location. Interested candidates should complete an online application at <a href="http://daveandbusters.com/careers" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">daveandbusters.com/careers</a>.</h4>

Dave &amp; Buster’s employees are provided with medical, dental, vision and 401K benefits for a number of positions. The chain also reportedly encourages internal promotions and enables high-performing team members to move quickly into new positions. More than 30 percent of the brand’s current management was promoted from within, according to the company.

The 47,000 square-foot restaurant will feature a “craveable” menu with chef-crafted food, inventive cocktail offerings and hundreds of arcade games. Several dozen large HDTVs will also cover the walls of the state-of-the-art D&amp;B Sports Bar in the perfect environment for groups of all sizes to come together and cheer on their favorite teams.

The family-owned<a href="https://texasdebrazil.com/"> Texas de Brazil</a> is billed as the largest Brazilian steakhouse brand, with restaurants in 23 states and seven countries. The closest to the Bay Area are three in Southern California (Fresno, Irvine, Carlsbad).

Soon the company will open its first Bay Area location — At The Veranda, the still-growing center along Interstate 680 in Concord.

First you choose a selection of cured meats, cheeses, salads and marinated vegetables at what seems like an endless salad bar. At Texas de Brazil, the 50-item array includes the Brazilian coconut fish stew called moqueca, lobster bisque, spicy shrimp salad, sushi and much more.

Then you sit down to a feast of grilled meats — beef, lamb, chicken — served tableside by wandering waiters. You flip up a card on your table to indicate you’re ready for more.

An opening date has not been announced. Stay tuned for that.

The first of 6 free concerts at The Veranda had a lively crowd dancing as the sun set Wednesday evening. The concert was preceded by a moment of silence to reflect on the 9/11 anniversary. <a href="https://www.sentinelsoffreedom.org/">Sentinels of Freedom</a>, a non-profit organization that helps severely wounded post-9/11 veterans complete their higher education, led the moment of silence.

<a href="https://davidmartinshouseparty.com/">David Martin’s House Party</a> soon had folks up on their feet to dance. The party band performed a wide range of music and performers periodically came down from the stage to join the crowd on the dance floor. The band entertained the crowd gathered near the Veranda fountain who brought lawn chairs, as well as those from nearby restaurants with outdoor seating that faced the concert.

Several Veranda businesses, including <a href="https://www.traviscu.org/">Travis Credit Union</a> and <a href="https://www.daveandbusters.com/nso/sports-bar-concord-arcade-and-fun-things-to-do?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=nso-concord&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw2efrBRD3ARIsAEnt0ejNs8CsW8kslZawVT2EsMuV0oc46lrzinVl9SL_-TCIAlkOsNF5SqgaAh0aEALw_wcB">Dave and Buster’s</a>, offered prizes and giveaways to help celebrate.<a href="https://www.visitconcordca.com/events/vibes-at-the-veranda/"> Go to VisitConcord.com for the complete concert schedule</a>.

<h3>Concord's Ko-Cups makes quick Korean cuisine accessible.</h3>

BY NICHOLAS BOER

Tucked near the Luxe Cinema in food-saturated The Veranda, Ko-Cups offers quick, accessible Korean fare in a big cup for less than a Super Duper Burger and much less than a dish-up from Whole Foods— making it the best bang for your buck in the mall.

Ko-Cups began as a food truck, and—with just three seats—this sleek and bright spot is barely bigger. No worries. All the food is packed to go and you’ll find tons of outdoor dining alongside the mall’s grassy plaza.

The Bibimbap with brown rice eats like a warm salad, with colorful, crunchy julienne veggies, including umami-laden plump shiitakes. Top it with a fried egg ($1) and load on the spicy gochujang sauce. The lightly fried mandu—Korean dumplings—are exceptionally juicy. Heartier appetites should choose between the chicken, pork, or—yes!—grilled rib-eye bulgogi cups. Slick potato noodles and crisp veggies add great texture.

Korean sodas, super-friendly service on our anonymous visit, and a raft of mayo-based sauces (try the sesame) add character.

The Veranda Offers New Dining Options in Concord

CONCORD, Calif. (ABC 7 News) - A brand new shiny shopping complex is opening Concord just as U.S. retailers are closing more stores going into 2018.

What do shoppers seem to like about the Veranda, a new shopping center located just across Interstate 680 from the Sun Valley Mall?

They say they love the fact that it's clean, fresh, new and modern. There are 10 new theaters, an ice rink and a fountain with an hourly light show.

General Manager Ashton Simmons says people tell him they feel "like I'm in Vegas, I am in Rockefeller Center with the ice rink and I'm in the East Bay in Concord."

Concord is bucking a national trend. According to a study by Fong global retail and tech, U.S. retailers announced plans to close about 7,000 stores in 2017 compared to only 3,400 store openings.

So the city is celebrating the new additional retail space.

Concord Mayor Edi Birsan says, "If we add more services to our community we have more happy people. So, all in all, it's a win win win. This is the first major development since 1973."

New Concord Shopping Center Opens Despite National Retail Trend

The Veranda, Concord

For several years people have been lamenting the <a href="https://www.beyondthecreek.com/barnes-noble-closes-in-walnut-creek/">closure of the Walnut Creek Barnes &amp; Noble</a> but good things come to those who wait with the long awaited opening tomorrow, May 22nd, of a new Barnes &amp; Noble store at the Veranda shopping center in Concord. Although the 12,000 square foot one story store is smaller than the Walnut Creek location, thanks to a new contemporary design featuring low profile bookcases, tall ceilings and spacious aisles it feels much larger and airy. In addition to a Starbucks cafe to the side there is outdoor seating, a communal table, comfortable chairs and counter top seating by the window which includes both outlets and even USB ports for charging. So as long as you can grab a parking spot this will be a great place to hang out.

The children’s section at the back left includes a large DUPLO LEGO activity table with plenty of reading selections for kids. There are also record, Nook, stationery, gift and other sections as well as a wide selection of non fiction and fiction books including regional recommendations targeted to local interests. Interestingly, in addition to publicly available kiosks where you can search for in stock books employees will also be roaming around with tablets where you can get help and best of all, pay for your books right there with no need to wait in line which is great!

Watch for book signings and community events at this space with Claire Booth, author of The Branson Beautyand other books appearing this Sunday, May 26th. Don’t forget to check plenty of photos of the inside including the children’s area and more after the jump.

Barnes &amp; Noble Opening Tomorrow at The Veranda in Concord

CONCORD (East Bay Times) - Whole Foods Market's newest store is taking shape in Concord and set to open Wednesday.

The store, which will open at 9 a.m., is the first of the grocery retailer's 365 stores - a smaller-format concept than its regular Whole Foods Market stores - to open in the Bay Area. Two more are slated to follow in Oakland and San Francisco.

The brand is more value-driven than the traditional Whole Foods Market stores, which it accomplishes by offering a curated assortment of mostly its own 365 brand products.

The new store in Concord will be 29,200 square feet and include in-store eateries Next Level Burger, an Oregon-based vegan burger chain, and Urban Remedy, a Bay Area-based purveyor of plant-based packaged meals, juices and snacks. Next Level Burger will occupy 1,149 square feet inside the Concord 365 store, while Urban Remedy will take 619 square feet.

The partnerships with those restaurants are part of a program called "Friends of 365" - an effort to offer shoppers options besides groceries, a spokeswoman said.

It will also include an in-store taqueria, run by Whole Foods staff, that will sell burritos, tacos, tortas and other items that customers order and pay for at screens toward the back of the store.

Screens and technology are present throughout the store. Some advertise announcements or discounts, while stations near the produce department will allow customers to weigh their produce on scales.

Shoppers at the Concord store will be able to participate in a members rewards programs in which they can get special discounts on items. That is something the traditional Whole Foods Market stores don't offer.

Chris Tiger, store team leader at the new 365 store, said he thinks shoppers will like the value they will find at the store, as well as the added technologies and efficiency of the store.

Shabu-shabu fans, take heed: there's a fresh all-you-can-eat place in town to get your fix. The new arrival is the latest branch of a Southern California-based chain called <a href="https://www.yelp.com/biz/shabuya-concord-2?adjust_creative=ripple&amp;utm_campaign=83ec308c-23de-404e-b6cc-5c3c040bc559%2Cf5ab6a8a-51a2-454b-9617-e04a86f624b2&amp;utm_medium=e1c52a80-96b4-4931-8f05-9a11a098b72e&amp;utm_source=ripple" target="_blank">Shabuya</a>, and is located in the Veranda shopping center at 2025 Diamond Blvd., Suite F150.

The table-made soup spot is open for both lunch and dinner, with seven soup bases (including a vegetarian stock), ten meats and seven seafood choices on offer -- from ribeye beef and pork belly to scallops and octopus. Veggies, sauces and sides are also available. (You can check out the basic menu <a href="https://redirect.hoodline.com/https-shabuya-net-so8ddd7bb7cf668eb723d4?utm_source=all-feed&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=stories&amp;pd00=b1b92e90-d31f-41f5-82d3-65a941008c13&amp;pd01=e1c52a80-96b4-4931-8f05-9a11a098b72e&amp;pd02=pl">here</a>.)

With a 4.5-star rating out of 24 reviews on Yelp so far, the fresh addition is on its way to developing a local fan base.

<h3>Cupcakin’ Bake Shop is launching two Berkeley locales; get your lox fix at another Noah’s Bagels; Concord welcomes a new doughnut concept from Dunkin’ Donuts; Livermore’s Harvest Wine Celebration returns after a mini break; and more Dish.</h3>

<h3>Popbar Arrives in The Veranda</h3>

In yet another first, Concord’s The Veranda houses the East Bay debut of <a href="https://www.pop-bar.com/" target="_blank">Popbar</a>, which serves gelato, sorbetto, and yogurt on a stick. There are already 18 Popbars in the United States—the first shop opened in New York in 2010—and 11 internationally, with more to come.

Popbars come in more than 40 rotating flavors and can be dipped or dusted with toppings including, but not limited to, chocolate, nuts, sprinkles, and caramel corn. And those searching for more frozen goodness can order a 16-ounce gelato shake.

<h3>Noah’s Bagels Opens in Danville</h3>

Just in case you can’t get to the two <a href="https://www.noahs.com/" target="_blank">Noah’s Bagels</a> in Walnut Creek, the one in Lafayette, the three in Oakland, or the two in Berkeley, there’s now yet another option: Iron Horse Plaza in Danville.

You know the drill: bagels, schmear, coffee, etc. But according to Beyond the Creek, customers can also get kombucha at the new outlet.

<h3>Cupcakin’ Bake Shop Triples the Fun</h3>

Lila Owens used to sell property, but today she’s taking it over. Five years ago, Owens left the real estate biz to start baking cupcakes—and now <a href="http://cupcakinbakeshop.com/" target="_blank">Cupcakin’ Bake Shop</a> is adding sites in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck Avenue and in Swan’s Market in Old Oakland.

In addition, her high-end cupcakes and other baked goods will get even more visibility near the UC campus once the shop moves from its original location on Durant Avenue to a spot on bustling Telegraph Avenue.

On top of her rotating lineup of cupcakes—including Lemon Cream Pie and Key Lime Pie varieties—Owens will also sell specialties from the much loved and dearly departed Virginia Bakery. She’s moving into that space, and owners John and Anne Erdmann shared their recipes (including one for those yummy sugar-sprinkle cookies).

<h3>Dunkin’ Donuts Drops “Donuts” in Concord</h3>

No, that doesn’t mean the new “next generation” <a href="https://www.dunkindonuts.com/" target="_blank">Dunkin’ Donuts</a> won’t serve doughnuts; it just won’t have “Donuts” on the sign. The location in Dianda Plaza shopping center (near the Treat Boulevard and Clayton Road crossroads) opened Tuesday with an emphasis on a quick turnaround for harried commuters.

The new shop offers digital kiosks to speed up orders, curbside delivery, and an expanded grab-and-go selection.

So, that coworker who looked especially bleary-eyed on Tuesday? Well, the first 100 customers who showed up at the 5 a.m. opening got free coffee for a year, so the line started early.

<h3>Livermore’s Harvest Wine Celebration Returns After a Year Hiatus</h3>

After too much heat—even for Livermore—forced the first cancellation in its 36-year history last year, Livermore Valley <a href="http://www.lvwine.org/" target="_blank">Harvest Wine Celebration</a> is back.

More than 35 local wineries will showcase their products Sunday, September 2, from noon to 5 p.m. Guests will be able to sample plenty of food and enjoy arts, crafts, and music.

Tickets to the event cost $40 in advance and $45 on Sunday—which allows visitors to sip vino at as many wineries as they can handle. Note, also, that festival wristbands will work at a number of the wineries on Monday, as well.

<img alt="Plank" src="http://diablomag-images.dashdigital.com/plank.jpg?ver=1535559348">

Plank

<h3>Do the Plank in Oakland for Labor Day</h3>

We’re not talking about working your abs in Jack London Square on Monday, September 3. In fact, it’s pretty much the opposite: The restaurant <a href="http://plankoakland.com/" target="_blank">Plank</a> will offer a special menu from noon to 7 p.m. that includes baby back ribs, barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, pulled pork, and a burger with fries.

Healthy? Well, maybe not, but if you count bocce ball, bowling, or arcade games as exercise, you can get in a workout to counteract those mashers.

<h3>We May See More Pop-Ups Popping Up in Contra Costa County</h3>

The <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/restaurants/article/Alameda-County-declares-pop-up-restaurants-illegal-13175453.php" target="_blank">San Francisco Chronicle</a> reported last week—yes, newspapers print news worth reading—that Alameda County cracking down on pop-ups had nothing to do with the Oakland A’s food truck row. Instead, the county is concerned with the increasing trend of chefs testing out culinary ideas and concepts for new restaurants via one-off evening events in existing commercial kitchens.

In Alameda County, it was ruled that allowing an outside chef and crew to take over a commercial kitchen is illegal unless they are covered by the restaurant owner’s permit—which makes pop-ups pretty much out of the question. But in Contra Costa County, according to Environmental Health Director Marilyn Underwood, pop-up chefs only need a seasonal permit, which is relatively easy to acquire.

“We support the use of restaurant kitchens [for pop-ups],” Underwood says. So Contra Costa residents may find themselves the beneficiaries of Alameda County’s more stringent rules, as cooks looking to do short kitchen stints may start shifting their one-night stands (so to speak) to Walnut Creek, Concord, or … really anywhere but Alameda County.

Diablo Dish: Popbar Is Open in The Veranda

If you think the free concert season ended with the close of the Music and Market series at Todos Santos last week, think again. This fall, the beat goes on with a new eight-concert series at The Veranda in Concord.

The concerts, sponsored by Andeavor Refinery and Visit Concord, are drawing big audiences. The bands were selected for their large local following.

The concerts are held in the fountain plaza area, which includes ample space for dancing. At the Sept. 12 concert, the high-octane soul and funk band Pride and Joy had dancers on their feet from the opening bars.

Veranda General Manager, Ashton Simmons, chose the fall for the free concerts so as not to compete with the Todos Santos series.

“Everyone does a summer series. We wanted something different.”

The “something different’ includes a five-minute spot at the beginning of each concert for a local non-profit to address the audience.

The non-profits are selected by Andeavor Refinery from their recent grantees, said Nichol Carranza, Lead Government and Public Affairs Specialist. “The first week, EMC Seafood donated proceeds from their wine sales to Monument Impact,” she said.

The series, which opened Sept. 5, will continue every Wednesday through October. The free concerts start at 6 p.m. and there is plenty of free parking.

Coming up
Sept. 28, Caravanserai, Santana tribute band
Oct. 3, the Funky Latin orchestra
Oct. 10, Diablo Road
Oct. 17, David Martin’s House Party
Oct. 24, Foreverland, tribute to Michael Jackson

Welcome to Doppio Zero, where you’ll find comfort, conversation, and the best Neapolitan pizza and Southern Italian cuisine Mountain View, Cupertino, and San Francisco has to offer.
Enjoy the taste of fresh, top-notch ingredients brought together in traditional Campania recipes, from polipetti pulled straight from the Mediterranean Sea to pizzas pulled from our wood-fired oven.
If you’re looking for pizza that is 100% autentica, Doppio Zero is the best you’ll find outside of Naples.
Doppio Zero also serves the best cuisine from Campania and the rest of Southern Italy that you’ll find within 100 miles of Mountain View. Simple yet rich, nourishing yet light, everything on our menu is crafted in-house to ensure the finest and freshest ingredients are used to give your palate the greatest possible pleasure. Locally sourced whenever possible and brought straight from Italy whenever necessary, only the best food touches our plate and passes your lips. Don’t let our care for culinary quality fool you, though—your pizza won’t be served by penguin-suited waiters. In the true Italian style, we offer gourmet cooking in a casual atmosphere; we fuss over the food so you don’t have to. When you’re at Doppio Zero you’re with famiglia, where you’re free to unwind, have fun, and enjoy life. It’s how good food, good wine, and good company are meant to be enjoyed.
